the wild buffalo
preserved, the reserve has also won its niche as a
birdwatchers' paradise.
The bluish water of the wide Koshi River with jungle patches
on both sides of the reserve. Not only does the water look
beautiful, but it also has created floodplains and wetlands
thus inviting many species of bird from far off places.
Pack up your raft and lunch before driving to your pick up
point at the river side. Even when you are driving along the
river, you might take the sight in front of you for an ocean
bay. Once on your raft, you will definitely enjoy the
tranquility of the reserve. As the mild current takes your
raft southwards, you will witness the feathered creatures of
all sorts - around 300 of different species have been
recorded so far. Most of the time in the river banks, you
will see 20 species of ducks, herons, storks, egrets, ibis,
among others - either food or preening or basking.
The river also has on offer the endangered gharial crocodile
and Gangetic Dolphin. The wetlands in the reserve beckon all
sorts of bird species. These birds fly all the way from
Siberia to migrate during winter. The fact that many birds
that arrive here are nowhere else seen in Nepal makes this
reserve birdwatchers' paradise in its true sense.
The vegetation of the reserve is mainly tall khar-pater
grassland with a few patches of khair-sissoo scrub forest
and deciduous mixed riverine forest. .
